Indonesia - False criminal charges brought against trade unionists

Anggiat Pandapotan Gultom, hairman of Branches Region of Federation KUI Muara Enim in the South of Sumatra (Construction and Building), was charged with criminal offences after criticising PT. Bania Rahma Utama (construction Company) for not including their workers on BPJS Kesehatan (Social Security Protection). After he raised allegations of the company’s failure to pay the wife of a deceased worker, Anggiat was arrested on the charge that he had forged a certificate of marriage between the deceased worker and the person who claimed to be his wife. After three months in gaol, Anggiat was released without conviction. However, the Prosecutor has appealed the decision to release him to the Supreme Court. The case is ongoing.
