Costa Rica - Intimidation and threats against trade unionists at Norteñas S.A.

On 3 June 2017, after a meeting between the owner of the pineapple producing company Exportaciones Norteñas S.A. and former trade union leaders José Ángel Picado and Henry Rosales, the company launched a public campaign against the private sector workers’ union SITRASEP (Sindicato de Trabajadores del Sector Privado). On 4 June 2017, Picado and Rosales attended a workers’ meeting and insulted and threatened the leaders of SITRASEP. On 8, 9 and 18 July, trade union leaders Jouseth Chaves and Francisco Cruz were followed by several individuals after coming out of meetings to discuss the collective bargaining process. On 20 July, Francisco Cruz’s neighbours warned him that five people were waiting for him on his doorstep, and on 1 September, a campesino warned him that he had overheard a group of individuals saying that they were going to kill him and his colleague Jouseth Chaves.
