Camboya - Twenty-one dismissed and three arrested for trying to form union at garment factory

The Cambo T.D.G. garment factory in Kompong Trach district fired 21 workers on 24 June 2016 for trying to form a union. Nearly half the 700 employees then went on strike in protest, and the factory reinstated all but two of the workers. The strike continued, pressing for the reinstatement of the remaining two workers.

On 5 July, three of the striking trade unionists were arrested, after workers allegedly blocked a car and a truck from leaving. Yon Sambou, 36, deputy secretary-general of the Cambodian Federation Labour Union (CFLU), and Sok Siden, 36, and Meas Touch, 35, from the Cambodian Federation of Freedom Union (CFFU), were detained outside the factory following a complaint from management. They were charged with incitement to commit a felony, a crime that carries a prison sentence of six months to two years.

The pair were released on 7 July after close to half of the 400 workers returned to work and the company withdrew its complaint.
