Camboya - Union leader sacked for demanding better working conditions

Tak Kim Chheng was sacked in June 2016 by I Sound Cable Cambo Co Ltd. Chheng said workers had frequently come to him with complaints before he was fired. “I was fired . . . because I always demand better working conditions for workers,” he said. He was the deputy leader of the Free Trade Union (FTU) at the factory.

More than 200 workers from the electronics factory in Kampong Speu conducted a week-long protest to demand his reinstatement and to press for improvements in their working conditions. They took their protest to the Ministry of Labour, which issued a letter saying it would “find a solution” if they returned to work.
